What does a British citizen need to marry in Thailand?
A British citizen needs a marital status affirmation from the British Embassy in Bangkok, applied for online and signed in person at the embassy, together with a certified copy of your passport. It is then translated into Thai and legalised by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With these documents, the marriage is registered at a Thai district office in one day.
Spoyzy in Bangkok helps British–Thai couples with every step, from the online application to the day at the district office.
Marrying your Thai partner is very possible for a British citizen, and a marriage registered in Thailand is recognised in the UK. The legal marriage is the registration at a Thai district office (Amphur or Khet); a ceremony at a temple or hotel has no legal effect on its own. This guide explains the British Embassy document you need in 2026, how to plan your trip around it, and what to do with your marriage certificate afterwards.
In short
- Apply online for a marital status affirmation, then sign it at the British Embassy in Bangkok. You receive it at the end of the appointment.
- Book the embassy appointment at least 7 days after you apply, and apply no more than 3 months before the wedding.
- You can only marry in the month and province stated on your application.
- Your Thai partner does not need to come to the embassy appointment.
- Then: Thai translation and legalisation at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (about 3 working days), and registration at the district office in one day.

1. Who can marry in Thailand?
Under Thai law, two people can register their marriage if both are at least 18 (with parental consent between 18 and 20), both are free to marry and can prove it, they are not closely related, and both appear in person at the district office. Since 23 January 2025, Thai law also allows marriage between two people of the same sex.
A marriage legally registered in Thailand is recognised in the UK if it was valid under Thai law and would be allowed under UK law.
2. The marital status affirmation (British Embassy)
Thai district offices need proof from the UK that you are free to marry. For British nationals, this is the marital status affirmation, issued by the British Embassy in Bangkok together with a certified copy of your passport.
How it works
- Apply online on GOV.UK (“Confirm you’re free to get married in Thailand”). The form takes about 35 minutes. You pay the embassy fee online: £50 for the affirmation and £25 for the certified passport copy.
- Book your embassy appointment for at least 7 days after you apply, so the embassy can check your documents.
- Go to the British Embassy in Bangkok with the originals of everything you uploaded. You sign the affirmation there and receive it at the end of the appointment.
Rules to plan around
- Do not apply more than 3 months before your wedding date.
- You can only marry in the month and province stated on your application, and these appear on the affirmation. If you plan to marry in Bangkok, state Bangkok.
- If you do not attend your appointment within 3 months of applying, the application is cancelled and the fee is not refunded.
- Your Thai partner does not need to attend the embassy appointment.
What you need
- Your valid UK passport.
- Proof of your permanent address, dated within the last 3 months (unless it is a residence permit or driving licence).
- Your partner’s passport or national ID card (details for the application).
- If you were married or in a civil partnership before: proof it ended, such as a decree absolute or final order, a dissolution or annulment document, or the death certificate of your former partner.
- Two referees with their names and addresses: they must not be Thai nationals and must live outside Thailand. They can be family or friends.
Your Thai partner prepares their Thai ID card, house registration (tabien baan), and a divorce certificate (Kor Ror 7) or name change certificate if relevant.
3. Translation and legalisation
The district office needs to read the affirmation. It is translated into Thai and the documents are legalised by the Department of Consular Affairs of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In practice, legalisation takes about 3 working days after submission, so plan it before your registration day.
4. Registration at the district office
You register the marriage together at a district office (Amphur or Khet), with your documents, two witnesses and an interpreter if you do not speak Thai. Registration is done in one day, and you receive the Thai marriage registration (Kor Ror 2) and marriage certificate (Kor Ror 3) the same day.
The district office must be in the province named on your affirmation. Requirements can differ slightly between offices, so check with the office beforehand.
5. How long does it take?
| Step | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Online application to embassy appointment | At least 7 days |
| Embassy appointment | Affirmation received the same day |
| Thai translation + Ministry of Foreign Affairs legalisation | About 3 working days |
| District office registration | One day |
If you apply online before you travel, everything in Bangkok can usually be done in about one week. If your stay is short, you can split it over two trips: the embassy appointment on the first trip, and the registration on the next one, as long as you stay within the month and province on your application.

6. After the wedding: using your marriage in the UK
- You cannot register a marriage that took place in Thailand in the UK. Your Thai marriage certificate is the official proof of your marriage.
- Keep the Thai certificate (Kor Ror 2 and Kor Ror 3) with a certified English translation. You will need it for a UK spouse visa, a passport name change, banks or pensions.
- If you plan to bring your spouse to the UK, check the current spouse visa requirements on GOV.UK before you apply.
7. Common mistakes
- Applying more than 3 months before the wedding, or booking the embassy appointment less than 7 days after applying.
- Stating the wrong province on the application, then trying to marry somewhere else.
- Referees who are Thai nationals or live in Thailand.
- Forgetting the original proof of address or divorce document at the embassy appointment.
- Booking flights so tight that there is no time for the 3 working days of legalisation.
- Thinking a ceremony is a legal marriage: only the district office registration counts.

Frequently asked questions
Does my Thai partner need to come to the British Embassy?
No. Only the British partner attends the embassy appointment. Both partners must be present at the district office for the registration.
How long is the marital status affirmation valid?
You can only marry in the month and province stated on your application. Most district offices accept affirmations dated up to 3 months before the wedding, so do not apply more than 3 months in advance.
Can we marry outside Bangkok?
Yes, at any district office in Thailand, as long as it is in the province you stated on your application.
Can we do everything in one trip?
Usually yes. If you apply online at least 7 days before your embassy appointment, the embassy, translation and legalisation, and registration can normally be done in about one week in Bangkok.
Do I need to register the marriage in the UK?
No, and you cannot. A marriage that took place in Thailand is not registered in the UK. Keep your Thai certificate with a certified English translation as proof.
Can same-sex couples marry in Thailand as British citizens?
Thai law allows same-sex marriage since 23 January 2025. Check the current British Embassy procedure for the affirmation before you apply.
