How do you get an Italy visa from Thailand?
Thai citizens need a short-stay Schengen visa (type C, up to 90 days) for tourism, a family or partner visit, or business. You apply in person at VFS Global (All Seasons Place, Bangkok; also Phuket and Chiang Mai), at least 15 days before travel. If you stay with someone in Italy, your host signs a declaration of hospitality and must report your stay to the police within 48 hours of your arrival.
Spoyzy in Bangkok checks and prepares the complete visa file and translations.
Would you like to visit Italy as a tourist, see your partner or family, or meet an Italian company? This guide follows the official list of documents for Schengen visas in Thailand and the Italian Embassy in Bangkok’s own forms, and explains what each document is for.

1. Which visa do you need?
For any stay of up to 90 days, Thai citizens need the same short-stay Schengen visa. What changes is the purpose, and with it a few documents.
| Purpose | Who it is for | Key extra documents |
|---|---|---|
| Tourism | Holidays in Italy, alone or with an organised tour | Hotel bookings, itinerary, bank statements for 3 months |
| Family or partner visit | Visiting family, a partner or friends who live in Italy | Declaration of hospitality (sponsorship and/or accommodation), proof of the relationship |
| Business | Meetings, trade fairs or training with an Italian company | Original invitation from the Italian company, certificate of employment from your Thai company |
- Apply to Italy when Italy is your main destination; if your days are split equally between countries, apply to the country where you first enter the Schengen area
- Book your appointment yourself on the VFS Global website
- Family members of an EU or Italian citizen who travel with or join them can apply directly at the Italian Embassy visa office, without appointment (ask us)
- Planning to stay longer than 90 days? That is a national (type D) visa, applied for at the embassy
2. Documents for every applicant
These come from the official EU list of supporting documents for Schengen visas in Thailand, which applies to Italy too.
- Application form for a type C visa, completed, dated and signed
- Passport valid at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area, issued less than 10 years ago, with 2 blank pages, plus copies
- Photo according to Schengen rules
- Proof of occupation: see section 6
- Round-trip flight reservation
- Travel medical insurance: at least €30,000, valid in all Schengen countries for the whole stay, including repatriation
- Name change certificate, if relevant
- Minors travelling without a parent: birth certificate, proof of custody, and the original consent letter from the parent(s), verified by an official body (for example the district office or a court)
3. Extra documents by purpose
Tourism
- Hotel booking or other accommodation for the entire stay
- An itinerary if you visit several countries
- For an organised tour: the original certificate or voucher from the travel agency
- Bank statements for the last 3 months, yours or those of the person paying for the trip
- If relevant: title deed for property, marriage certificate, children’s birth certificates
Family or partner visit
- The declaration of hospitality (“proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation”) signed by your host in Italy, if they host you and/or pay (see section 4)
- Proof of the relationship: birth or marriage certificate or family book; for a partner, a copy of the host’s passport page and travel history, and proof of correspondence
- Proof of your ties to Thailand: title deed, bank account, marriage certificate, children’s birth certificates
- Need an invitation letter too? See our invitation letter guide
Business
- An original invitation letter from the Italian company on its letterhead, with the purpose, the dates and who pays (the embassy publishes a form for this, to be filled in by the company in Italian)
- An original certificate of employment from your company in Thailand with your position, length of employment, salary, the purpose and length of the trip, and who pays
- Trade fair tickets and invitation, if relevant
- Bank statements for the last 3 months of whoever pays
4. The declaration of hospitality (your host)
Italy uses one form, published by the Italian Embassy in Bangkok, for both sponsorship (your host pays) and private accommodation (you stay at their home).
- Your host fills in their details (ID, passport or residence permit, address, job) and yours, the dates and the reason for the visit
- They tick what they cover: your accommodation, your living costs, your health insurance, and optionally a bank guarantee (“fideiussione bancaria”) for a set amount
- A company or organisation can also sign it
- Within 48 hours of your arrival in Italy, your host must report your stay at their home to the local police (Pubblica Sicurezza)
- Your host confirms they know the penalties for false statements

5. How much money do you need?
Italy does not use one amount per day. The Ministry of the Interior sets a table that depends on the length of the stay and the number of travellers:
| Length of stay | One traveller | Two or more (per person) |
|---|---|---|
| 1–5 days | €269.60 in total | €212.81 in total |
| 6–10 days | €44.93 per day | €26.33 per day |
| 11–20 days | €51.64 + €36.67 per day | €25.82 + €22.21 per day |
| More than 20 days | €206.58 + €27.89 per day | €118.79 + €17.04 per day |
Examples: one person for 30 days needs about €1,043; one person for 90 days about €2,717.
Accepted proof: bank statements for the last 3 months, a bank or insurance guarantee, or proof of income available in Italy. If your host pays, their declaration of hospitality (and any bank guarantee) covers this.
Tip from our cases: statements that show regular income over several months are more convincing than one large deposit just before you apply. If money was deposited recently, add a short explanation and proof of where it came from.

6. Proof of employment and ties to Thailand
| Your situation | What to provide |
|---|---|
| Employee | The company’s registration and a statement of employment with the number of vacation days granted, your position and your monthly salary |
| Self-employed | Proof that you own the business (company registration) |
| Everyone (if possible) | Title deed for a home or land, marriage certificate, children’s birth certificates, bank account |
In our experience, Thai-language documents should be translated into English.
7. Where to apply: VFS Global (Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai)

- Appointment: book on the VFS Global Italy Thailand website. Call centre +66 2 460 7802
- In person: you hand in your documents and passport and give your fingerprints
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Visa fee, adult | €90 (3,330 THB) |
| Visa fee, child aged 6–12 | €45 (1,665 THB) |
| Visa fee, child under 6 | Free |
| VFS Global service fee (Bangkok) | 751 THB (VAT included) |
The baht amounts follow the embassy’s quarterly exchange rate (changes on 1 January, 1 March, 1 June and 1 October). Optional VFS premium services do not change the decision. Nothing is refunded if the visa is refused.
8. Timeline: when to do what
| When | What |
|---|---|
| 2–3 months before travel | Decide the purpose and dates. If you stay with a host, they fill in and sign the declaration of hospitality and send it to you. |
| 6–8 weeks before | Gather documents, ask your employer for the statement, get English translations, buy travel insurance, reserve flights (refundable if possible) |
| 4–6 weeks before | Fill in the application form and book your VFS Global appointment |
| Appointment day | Apply in person with the documents; pay the fees; fingerprints |
| After applying | By EU law the decision is due within 15 calendar days, extendable to 45 days in some cases |
| Arrival in Italy | Your fingerprints and photo are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System. Your host reports your stay to the police within 48 hours. If you arrive in Italy from another Schengen country, you must declare your presence at the police (Questura) within 8 days; a hotel’s registration counts as this declaration. |
