How can a Thai family member or partner visit Belgium?
They need a short-stay Schengen visa (up to 90 days). Your guest fills in the visa-on-web form and applies in person at TLScontact Bangkok. If you pay for the stay, you sign an Annex 3bis at your commune. Thai documents only need an English translation; no embassy legalisation is needed for a visit visa.
Spoyzy in Bangkok checks and prepares the complete visa file and translations.
Would you like to invite a family member, your partner or a friend from Thailand to Belgium? Thai citizens need a short-stay Schengen visa (type C) for a visit, applied for in person at TLScontact in Bangkok. The key document from the host is the Annex 3bis, a formal undertaking signed at your Belgian commune to cover the costs of the stay. This guide follows the Belgian Embassy in Bangkok’s official checklist for 2026.
In short
- A short-stay Schengen visa: up to 90 days in any 180-day period
- Your guest completes the form on visa-on-web, prints and signs it, then applies in person at TLScontact Bangkok
- If you cover the costs, you sign an Annex 3bis at your commune and send the original to Thailand
- Thai-language documents only need to be translated into English; no embassy legalisation is required for a visit visa
- Apply at least 2 weeks and no more than 6 months before travel. Visa fee €90 (€45 for children aged 6–12), not refunded if refused

1. Which visa, and who can apply?
- For visiting family, a partner or friends living in Belgium, for up to 90 days
- Apply to Belgium when Belgium is the main destination of the trip
- Visiting an unmarried partner is possible, with proof or a history of the relationship
- The purpose cannot be changed and the visa cannot be extended later; a new application is needed
- If you are married and want to live together in Belgium, a long-stay visa is needed: see our family reunification guide
2. The Annex 3bis (for the host)
The Annex 3bis (formal undertaking of financial support) is an official document from your Belgian commune in which you commit to cover all costs of your guest’s stay.
- You sign it at the commune / gemeente where you live
- Your guest needs the original for the visa application, so send it by post in good time
- Add proof of your income (payslips or tax assessment), your family composition and a copy of your ID card or residence permit
- If your guest pays for everything themselves, they must show sufficient funds of their own instead
3. Documents (Belgian Embassy checklist)
Your guest’s documents (in Thailand)
- Visa application form from visa-on-web, printed, dated and signed, with one colour photo 3.5 x 4.5 cm, white background
- Original passport valid at least 3 months after leaving the Schengen area, with 2 blank pages, plus copies of the data page and all used pages
- Proof of own funds: payslips, bank statements or credit card
- Proof of return: employer letter with approved leave, school letter, company registration, property or dependants in Thailand
- Travel medical insurance issued in Thailand, at least €30,000, valid in all Schengen countries for all travel dates
- Return flight reservation
- Minors (under 18): copy of the birth certificate, plus consent from the parent(s) not travelling and a copy of their passport
Your documents (the host in Belgium)
- An invitation letter with the details of the trip
- A copy of your ID card or residence permit (front and back)
- Proof of the relationship: birth or marriage certificates for family; proof or history of the relationship for a partner
- Accommodation: your confirmation that your guest stays with you (can be in the invitation letter) or a booking
- If you cover the costs: the original Annex 3bis with your income proof, family composition and ID
The embassy asks for A4 pages and clearly readable copies, in the order of the checklist. Thai-language documents must be translated into English; no embassy legalisation is needed for a visit visa.

Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should my guest apply for a Belgian visa?
At the earliest 6 months and at least 2 weeks before travel, but start earlier: you need time to sign the Annex 3bis and post the original to Thailand.
Can my unmarried partner visit me in Belgium?
Yes. The Belgian Embassy accepts proof or a history of the relationship, such as photos together, message history and previous visits.
Is the Annex 3bis always required?
No. It is used when the host covers the costs. If your guest pays everything, they must show sufficient funds of their own.
Can the visa be extended in Belgium?
No. The embassy states that the visa cannot be extended and the purpose cannot be changed; a new application is required.
Is the visa fee refunded if the visa is refused?
No. Read the reasons in the refusal letter, then appeal within the deadline or reapply after fixing the issues. We can review the refusal and prepare a new file.
